Training

Learn sailing and boating skills at SailTime Newport

Sailtime Newport provides a full range of training to both new and existing members. We can provide a number of RYA/YA courses. Additionally, we provide a number of experience days that will help you brush up on certain skills – whether you are a complete novice or an experienced sailor, SailTime has a training solution for you.

To enable you as a member or owner-member to sail alone and unassisted we require you to have reached the RYA/YA Day Skipper qualification (theory and practical). We strongly believe that this standard is the minimum that will enable you to feel confident in handling the boat and to enjoy your sailing with family and friends.

The ensuing professionalism of your sailing also helps to avoid unnecessary boating incidents that might otherwise result in the damage of the boat, spoiling the enjoyment of the SailTime experience for you and for others. Also, the owner-member knows that their boat is being sailed by select and competent members who undoubtedly will become seafaring friends.

Whilst you are working towards your RYA/YA Day Skipper qualification you can, of course, still sail. However, it is a requirement that you have onboard someone, guest or instructor, of Day Skipper standard or higher.

One of the benefits of SailTime is that you are able to use your sailing time to enjoy instruction on your own yacht rather than in a group situation onboard a basic and unfamiliar sailing school training boat.

Through one of the SailTime affiliated RYA/YA sailing schools we are able to provide you with professional quality training on your yacht to help you become a more confident skipper, regardless of your initial standard. Our programme gives you the flexibility to have a Sailing Instructor or Yachtmaster Instructor onboard for one-to-one tuition, group tuition, or simply as a companion to help build your confidence on a new boat.

Short courses

In addition to the RYA/YA courses, there are a number of 'improve/ refresh your skills' training programs. These provide great opportunity to sharpen your skills. Ranging from Man Over Board, Sail Trimming, Mooring techniques, Anchoring, Night Sailing, navigation or just mile building, there is something for all experience levels of sailor to benefit from.

Skippered Charter Itineries

Our Skippered Charter, Twilight (2 hours), Half Day (4 hours) and Full Day (8 hours) cruises provide guests the opportunity to take in the sights and experiences of the beautiful Lake Macquarie on board “Savannah” our luxury Beneteau Oceanis 34.  Guests can plan their own adventure or alternatively can head to some of those destinations mentioned below.

Lake Macquarie is Australia’s largest coastal lake, four times as large as Sydney Harbour.  It has many sandy inlets, secluded bays and protected foreshores which are perfect for a wonderful day or evening sail.

We depart from Marmong Marina located at the top end of Lake Macquarie, which has a beautiful bush outlook and up to date amenities and a café.

Some suggested ideas include:

Twilight Sail

  • Friday evenings why not head over to Warners Bay to listen to Music in the Rotunda (insert link to weekly performers) on board the yacht.
  • Sail to Awaba Bay, a secluded quiet bay with a serene bush outlook and calm sandy beach for an evening dip.
  • Head to Toronto, a bustling coastal town with numerous Resturants and Take Away food options to grab a bite, or just cruise by.
  • Take a leisurely sail around the top end of the lake with the dolphins playing, and take in the sights of Valentine, Elebana, Croudace Bay and Green Point while the sun drops and colours the cliffs and bushland.

Half Day Sail

  • Head down towards Pulbah Island where you can enjoy some swimming or fishing.
  • Stop in at Cardiff Point for a quiet morning or afternoon tea, watching the birds and quiet bushland.  A quick dip in the calm clear water.
  • Sail towards Raffertys Resort to watch the pelican feeding.

Full Day Sail

  • Head down past Dora Creek, a quiet little location, where you may wish to explore the creek by tender.
  • Check out Wangi Wangi, where you may want to enjoy Brunch at the well known RSL.
  • You may wish to explore Gwandalan at the far southern end of the Lake.
  • Why not head towards Murrays Beach for a wonderful lunch at the Lakeside Café, in a pretty bushland setting- where it is easier to access on boat than by road!
  • The Bird Cage is a popular spot for relaxing, and enjoying the view.

Skippered Charters for up to 6 people

  • ½ Day Sailing $600*

  • Full Day Sailing $800*

  • Twilight Sailing $380*

Enjoy Sailing Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie is Australias' largest coastal salt water lake covering 110 square kilometers, four times as large as Sydney Harbour. This immense blue water lake is renowned for its beauty and numerous locations for waterfront dining. Its sandy inlets, secluded bays and protected foreshores are perfect for a wonderful day or evening of sailing. All this is just 90 minutes drive north of Sydney and 20 minutes from Newcastle. Uncrowded sailing conditions, deep water, sandy beaches, hidden coves and bays and consistent North East sea breezes in summer have made the lake a premier sailing destination. The SailTime Lake Macquarie base is located at Marmong Point Marina one of the largest marinas in Australia

Moorings, anchorages & public berthing

There are numerous amazing places to anchor and berth. The shores of the saltwater lake are dotted with small towns, each with their own little character, and easily accessible by boat. Wangi RSL is a great stop for breakfasts and has a jetty. Lake Macquarie Yacht Club often has live music and both a great Restaurant and Bistro. The Bird Cage is a popular name for a sheltered anchorage just west of Bird Cage Point, it is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the views. There are a number of courtesy moorings dotted around the lake at Swansea Bridge, Green Point, Pulbah Island, Wangi Wangi and Kilaben Bay.

We also recommend you sail to some of the many other bays including Awaba Bay, Wangi Point, Myuna Bay and Chain Valley Bay. If you want a full day of adventure, fun and relaxation, set course for Pulbah Island a 70 hectare nature reserve situated at the south end of Lake Macquarie. This is an ideal spot for swimming, snorkelling, bushwalking, picnicking or just lazing about, and because you can only access it by boat it is relatively private. Moon Island Nature Reserve is another great spot for fishing and bird watching, at the entrance to Lake Macquarie, east of Swansea Heads. As well as the spectacular landscapes of green headlands, foreshores, cliffs and coves to discover, there are many cafes, restaurants and eateries to indulge your appetite. You can conveniently tie up at Awaba House Restaurant and Cafe, Rafferty Resort, Milanos at Marks Point and Jesses at Valentine, just to name a few.
