Our next combined Competent Crew/Day Skipper courses are scheduled to commence on Friday Morning November 7 and December 12, finishing on to the following Sunday, on our training and racing vessel “Swift”. Newly returned from the Hamilton island race series, Swift gives a taste of high performance sailing while you concentrate on mastering the basics.
To get the qualification you will need to attend two of these sessions – the entire course is mandated at a minimum of 5 days, and it really does take that long to get through the syllabus. Competent Crew candidates focus on winching and helming in safety, whilst gaining an understanding of “how it all works”. Usually just mastering the terminology is a major achievement, as well as the eight knots required for any sailing – as well as the challenge of an introductory offshore passage. More advanced Day Skipper candidates on the same course are trained in boat handling, docking, navigation and sailing strategy as well as undertaking a challenging night-pilotage exercise.
So how does it work to combine the two courses on the same boat? Remarkably well, with the Competent Crewers providing a crew for the trainee skippers, and the Day Skippers passing on their knowledge to the new crew. Our highly experienced Yachtmaster Instructor oversees all and ensures that the highest standards of safety and knowledge transfer take place in a fun environment.
