Angela and I own and operate SailTime Newport on the beautiful Pittwater just 45 minutes drive north of Sydney harbour

We first discovered SailTime in 2007 and after two years of research and after visiting bases and meeting with SailTime members in both Europe and the USA we took the plunge and started SailTime Newport in April 2009.

We believe the SailTime concept is the perfect solution for people looking to sail regularly with friends and family but without the hassle of owning and maintaining the boat themselves. Angela is relatively new to sailing so we understand the apprehension that some people have about going on the water and the importance of progressing at a pace that you are comfortable with.

I have been enthusiastically sailing and racing for a number of years and as a qualified Sailing Instructor I appreciate that a good days sailing is a combination of the challenge of testing your skills against the elements while having a safe and enjoyable time.

Whether you are a beginner or fully qualified, SailTime Newport offers an extensive range of YA training programmes tailored to suit your needs. Our goal is to ensure that when you go out on the water with your friends and family you can enjoy the world of sailing in a safe and affordable way.

Angela & I like to offer all our members a chance to make new friends through our regular member events including Sail days, twilight racing, cruises and local regattas and picnics.

Pittwater – one of Sydney's best kept secrets.

Just 45 minutes drive north of the Sydney CBD are long stretches of open beach, rugged headlands and sandstone sea cliffs, tranquil waterways, native bushland with pockets of rainforest, wetlands providing sanctuary to a myriad of bird species, and rock platforms bursting with marine life.

Pittwater, known locally as "God's back garden" is Sydney's best-kept secret and provides access to the spectacular waterways that makes SailTime Newport particularly special.

Come and Experience the highlights of Pittwater and Broken Bay with its delightful anchorages at Coasters Retreat , America Bay , Refuge Bay, and numerous marinas and restaurants and coffee shops at Church Point, Newport, Bayview Cottage Point , Bobbin head , Akuna bay, Brooklyn and many sheltered anchorages such as Jerusalem Bay, Smith Creek, Towlers or Hallett’s beach.

Pittwater is widely acclaimed as a perfect sailing ground for everyone from novice sailors through to experienced seamen, and makes an ideal location for SailTime Newport .

With it’s predominate nor-east sea breezes sweeping down over Barrenjoey Peninsula and offering protection from often rowdy Tasman Sea swells, one can comfortably sail the length and breadth of Pittwater, enjoying the challenges of mastering the elements in safety. Pittwater and it adjoining waterways of Broken Bay and the Hawkesbury offer members the opportunity to safely navigate hundreds of nautical miles of pristine bays, inlets and rivers.

Sailing out of Pittwater, up into one of the south-western arm of the Hawkesbury River, you have to remind yourself forcefully that you’re only 45 minutes (by road) from the hustle of central Sydney.

Moorings, anchorages & public berthing

There are several amazing places to anchor or berth for the night. Most bays and inlets in Pittwater contain public moorings.

Pittwater’s Royal Motor Yacht Club (RMYC) offers overnight berthing, as well as a good fuel and tucker stop.

Further north of Scotland Island lies The Basin, a naturally enclosed lagoon, featuring a great camping/picnic spot.

Once a vital refuge for coastal trading ships, the Basin, a naturally enclosed lagoon, featuring a great camping/picnic is now part of a National park.

You can also find hundreds of popular public moorings in Refuge Bay and America Bay.

In Australia’s early colonial days, these bays offered safe haven for convicts, smugglers and would-be pirates.I

t’s a beautiful location, offering stunning scenery…grandiose sandstone cliffs jetting out over the bay, and a waterfall that seems to spring from the porous cliff before crashing into a pool below. What better place to take a refreshing soak or wash the day’s salt spray off your tired body?

Training

Learn sailing and boating skills at SailTime Newport

Sailtime Newport provides a full range of training to both new and existing members. We can provide a number of RYA/YA courses. Additionally, we provide a number of experience days that will help you brush up on certain skills – whether you are a complete novice or an experienced sailor, SailTime has a training solution for you.

To enable you as a member or owner-member to sail alone and unassisted we require you to have reached the RYA/YA Day Skipper qualification (theory and practical). We strongly believe that this standard is the minimum that will enable you to feel confident in handling the boat and to enjoy your sailing with family and friends.

The ensuing professionalism of your sailing also helps to avoid unnecessary boating incidents that might otherwise result in the damage of the boat, spoiling the enjoyment of the SailTime experience for you and for others. Also, the owner-member knows that their boat is being sailed by select and competent members who undoubtedly will become seafaring friends.

Whilst you are working towards your RYA/YA Day Skipper qualification you can, of course, still sail. However, it is a requirement that you have onboard someone, guest or instructor, of Day Skipper standard or higher.

One of the benefits of SailTime is that you are able to use your sailing time to enjoy instruction on your own yacht rather than in a group situation onboard a basic and unfamiliar sailing school training boat.

Through one of the SailTime affiliated RYA/YA sailing schools we are able to provide you with professional quality training on your yacht to help you become a more confident skipper, regardless of your initial standard. Our programme gives you the flexibility to have a Sailing Instructor or Yachtmaster Instructor onboard for one-to-one tuition, group tuition, or simply as a companion to help build your confidence on a new boat.

Skippered Charter – SailTime Newport

Sailtime Newport Skippered Charter offers you and your family, friends, colleagues and overseas visitors the opportunity to experience a memorable day on Pittwater and the surrounding national park.

Our yachts cater for up to 10 people and our fully qualified and friendly skippers ensure you have an enjoyable day on the water. You can choose to either “learn the ropes” and sail the boat under the watchful eye of your experienced skipper or just sit back and relax , either way you are guaranteed an enjoyable day on the water.

Pittwater and it surrounds is one of Australia’s most beautiful sailing grounds where you can experience the beauty of Pittwater and Broken Bay with its delightful anchorages at Coasters Retreat, America Bay , Refuge Bay, and numerous marinas and restaurants and coffee shops at Church Point, Newport, Bayview, Cottage Point , Bobbin head , Akuna bay, Brooklyn and many sheltered anchorages such as Jerusalem Bay, Smith Creek, Towlers or Hallett’s beach.

Places on Interest

Pittwater

There are many places to visit or drop anchor, probably the best know is Coasters Retreat with its sheltered anchorage and numerous moorings. It is just a short row ashore to the surrounding national park and the basin a popular sheltered water with its surrounding grass lands , public gas bbq’s, showers and toilets . Alternatively you can drop anchor at Towlers inlet or anchor off Portuguese bay or in the lee of Barrenjoey heads.

Broken Bay Cowan Creek

Broken Bay and its tributary Cowan Creek offer numerous bays, inlets and beaches to explore and with its frequent North East Breezes offers the perfect conditions for sailing . As you round West Head with Barrenjoey lighthouse off the starboard beam and Lion Island dead ahead you enter Cowan Creek. You can choose to sail across to Patonga drop anchor and row ashore for a sumptuous lunch at Patonga Beach Hotel or tuck around the headland and drop anchor at Hungary Beach. Heading further west and you have the choice of Refuge Bay, Americas Bay, Jerusalem Bay and Hallets Beach to drop anchor or you can explore Brooklyn and the lower Hawkesbury River

Twilight Charter itinerary suggestions – only during day light saving

Meet your Skipper at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at 6pm and after crew safety briefing and boat orientation set sail for Pittwater. After hoisting the sails we traverse the waters between Scotland Island and Salt Pan Cove / Refuge Cove.

Prevailing winds permitting we pass Taylors Point and Clareville Beach and head north to round the mark at Stokes Point before executing the perfect Gybe and heading across the bay to Portuguese Bay and past Longnose point

Half day charter suggested itinerary

Meet your Skipper at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club either 9.30am or Midday and after crew safety briefing and boat orientation set sail for Pittwater After passing Scotland Island on the port side and Salt Pan and Refuge Cove you head north towards Lion Island. Depending on the prevailing winds you can sail due north past Coaster retreat to Palm Beach and Barrenjoey head or test your sailing skills and tuck around Scotland Island and explore Morning Bay, Lovett Bay and McCarrs Creek . Or you can drop anchor off Portuguese Bay or in the shadow of Towlers lookout.

With a following breeze you head for home enjoying the full breadth of Pittwater as you past Clareville Beach and Taylors point. A couple of well executed tacks see you back at RPAYC where you drop sails and head into the club to enjoy some well-earned refreshments

Full day charter suggested itinerary

Meet your Skipper at RPAYC Club at 9.30am and after crew safety briefing and boat set sail for Pittwater. After passing Scotland Island on the port side and Salt Pan and Refuge Cove you head north towards Lion Island. Sailing past Longnose point , Portuguese Bay you now have a clear view of Barrenjoey lighthouse and the majesty of Broken Bay. As we approach West head we put in a well executed Gybe and head back down Pittwater and after passing Great Mackerel Beach we enter Coasters Retreat and secure a lunch time mooring. Here you have a choice to stay on board and enjoy lunch or grab your picnic basket and take a trip ashore to explore the nearby beaches, National Park and The Basin a stunningly beautiful and popular protected swimming hole.

After a relaxing lunch and perhaps a swim we weigh anchor and round Soldiers Point and head out for an afternoon sail. Depending on the wind you can choose to head north past West head to Lion Island or test your skills and tack behind Scotland Island, explore Morning Bay, Lovett Bay and McCarrs Creek

Then as the day comes to an end it is time to drop the sails and head back home. A couple of well executed tacks see you back at RPAYC where you drop sails and head into the club to relive the day and enjoy some well earned refreshments
